Our Story
Over a glass of wine and a table filled with local Hawaiian fare, founder Peter Kang explored the possibility of starting a new snack company. Inspired his love for food, design, and Hawai’i, he created Makamaka Snacks, a Honolulu-based company with a passion for creating gourmet Hawaii-inspired snacks. Working with local vendors and growers, a line of beautifully packaged pancake kits with curated ingredients is now available.
Founder
Peter’s background in start-up businesses and real estate has taken him all over the US and abroad. From pet care centers in Canada to pizzerias in Korea, his love for emerging trends has been his passion. Though he’s lived in Korea, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Vancouver, Hawaii has always been his home since immigrating here in 1974 from Seoul, Korea.

Makamaka is a snack company based in Honolulu, Hawaii, committed to producing, high-quality and upscale gifts, also known as omiyage. We pride ourselves on using locally sourced premium ingredients, expert craftsmanship, and quality presentation. We aim to offer our customers an authentic Hawaiian experience by collaborating closely with local vendors. At the heart of our business is our passion for crafting exceptional gourmet snacks and pancakes that highlight Hawaii's delectable and distinctive flavors while elevating everyday ingredients to a new level.

Peter is not only enthusiasts of fine cuisine and excellent design, but the core motivation lies in making a positive impact in Hawaii. The mission involves embracing local ingredients and supporting homegrown businesses to uplift the community, foster jobs, and enrich the families that contribute to the unique essence of this place. Although sourcing from beyond Hawaii's borders might be more cost-effective, they firmly believe that the substantial benefits of choosing locally far outweigh the potential savings. The beauty of the people and the land makes these choices meaningful and worthwhile.
